The Solar Solution to Holy Cross Energy Rate Changes

solar solution to Holy Cross Energy rate change

On March 1, 2023, Holy Cross Energy announced a new rate plan which goes into effect on September 1, 2023.
This new rate plan makes a series of changes:
>     Increases Monthly Membership Fee
>    Splits Energy Charge into two separate components: an Energy Charge and a Delivery Charge
>    Imposes Demand Charges on ALL Customers between 4PM and 9PM

While the Energy Charge only applies to net usage (over and above what the customer has in their Net Metering Bank), the Delivery Charge will be applied to the energy you use from your Net Metering kWh bank as well as the energy you purchase from HCE. It will not apply to energy consumed directly from your Solar Power System at time of use. This will increase everybody’s HCE Bill – unless they do not use any grid power.

The Demand Charges are imposed on all power drawn from the grid between 4 PM and 9 PM, even if you have a positive balance in your Net Metering kWh bank. The only way to avoid these new Demand Charges is to use power from your installed Solar Power System during these hours.

This means augmenting your Solar Power System with battery storage makes more sense than ever. Now you can save even more money by allowing your batteries to power your home between 4 & 9 PM, thus avoiding these new Demand charges.

Now you can opt out of demand charges by powering your home AND charging your batteries during the day with solar power, so that the batteries provide your home electricity in the evening. This has the added benefit of providing power during local power outages so that your property is never without electricity.

Batteries can also reduce or potentially eliminate Delivery Charges by using power generated from your own Solar Power System rather than using grid-generated power.

If Independence is what you want, PV + Battery Storage is what you need. This will allow you to decide when and if you want to tap into the grid for electricity.

Customers that have already gone solar must choose their new rate plan by August 15, 2023.  New customers should include storage batteries in their solar power system for the most benefit.

Additionally, new systems installed prior to August of this year can be optionally grandfathered into HCE’s “legacy system” category and will notice even less of an impact from these forthcoming changes.
